Bujinkan Shinmyoken Dojo: Training

The goal of our martial arts training is twofold: to teach the students body how to move correctly in the martial arts, and to impart the transmission of the Bujinkan martial arts into that student. To this end no two classes are really the same and everybody practices the same lessons- there are no beginner or advanced groups.

Most classes begin with the basic foundation techniques of our martial art which include ukemi (landing & rolling), postures, striking, locks, throws, and san shin no kata solo exercises. The goal here is teach the student how to move their body in balance and with good timing and distance. Layered over this is a second level of locks, throws, strikes, etc. which examine how waza (techniques) can interact with your training partner- now that you have your balance and body understanding you take it from your training partner. A final layer over this are the formal kata (patters) that make up the Bujinkan system which are an interaction between two training partners using distance, timing, and rhythm. Each student progresses at their own pace with the goal of solid and steady progress over time, which is the steady formula to understanding and internalizing the martial arts.
